Picture of USB Power Arlo Camera

I got tired of buying expensive batteries for my wireless ARLO Cameras (Not ARLO PRO or ARLO PRO2). They only last about 3 or 4 months.

In a users blog someone suggested to power the camera vie the microUSB port on the camera. I didn't notice it before because is very small and it has a white rubber plug that blends with the housing.

I didn't like the idea of exposing the camera to the weather so I decided to design a Battery Door with access to the microUSB port while keeping the camera ID.

At first I only tested thjis solution on one camera to make sure it work. Some people reported that his camera will stop running after a few days on USB 5v Power.

I experienced that issue when I used a Cellphone USB Power Adapter under 1 AMP of current.

Once I replaced it with a 2.0 AMP power adapter the camera worked well.

Now I have two cameras running since December 2017.

I recommend that before you hack your camera, you try with the power adapter that you want to use to make sure it works more than just a few hours.

Also remember to update your camera firmware.

Step 1: Removing Battery Door

Picture of Removing Battery Door

The first step is to remove the Battery Door. There are 2 small tabs that keep the Door Hinge Pin in place. Cut both of them so the Door can come off. You can use a small wire cutter or knife to do that, just be careful not t cut yourself.

I purchased the STL file and the print fits pretty well. I don't have any power outlets near my cameras and didn't want cables running everywhere. So what I am testing right now is a 10,000 mAh recharging battery pack to see how long it lasts. If that works I'll just design a case for the battery pack to try and hide it and buy additional packs for my other cameras.

I had a good friend convert my two cameras, bought all the parts recommended first. Had them working in the house before I out them outside. One is under an eve, the other is more exposed, especially the wires. both working great, and the one has had 5 inches of snow on it.

I just installed the basic Arlo wire free about 2 days ago, and I am not happy with the batteries. already used all that were sent. I purchased a set of covers from Etsy, will they fit the basic Arlo I just bought?

There are so far 3 version of Arlo wireless camera.

Arlo Pro

Arlo Pro2

The covers that I designed are for Alro only, not for any of the Pro versions, which come with rechargeable batteries and external usb charging port so they don't need this solution.

Just make sure you use a 2 AMP power adapter because less than 1.5 may not work or may work on and off.

As you can see on the photos, the first (ARLO) has a battery cover on the bottom of the camera. The PRO versions have it on the back. I believe the main difference between PRO and PRO 2 is the resolution.

How's your machine working lately? what is your Power indicator of app ,Is it always 100%?
do you find , Use the micro usd port power, the cam can work ,but the Motion detection is not work .or the Motion detection is only work 2~3hours,then is not work ; i test a few days .when i use the Li battery , both the cam and the Motion detection are OK . I Use dc6v1A 、 dc 5v/1a 、qc3.0 adapter。

You need 1.5 AMP power. 5VDC at 1 AMP is not enough.
A few minutes ago,i use the 5v /2a adapter test ,find the cam can work, and the Motion monitoring only work 5mins, now the Motion monitoring Not working。

I modified 2 of my 4 cameras and both have been working for weeks. I get constant notifications from both of them, they also work at night with the IR illumination.
I remember reading that some users experienced similar issues with some cheap 123 size batteries that didn't have enough milliamps or drained very quickly.
Have you tried to update your camera firmware?
My cameras were not working at the beginning but once I replaced my power charger (5v 700mA) with another (5v 1.5A) and updated the firmware as another user suggested everything work well and is running for more than 1 month so far.

i have two arlo cams , the firmware both are 1.2.16720 . what is your firmware ? the cam is ok, I did cross-test。 Only in the case of usb cord, the above will happen.

I see you also have a Pro. Is that camera running from rechargeable batteries or just by the Power Supply? Just curious because I don't remember the difference between the Pro and Pro2 other than the resolution.
pro2 Pro and Pro no big difference ,arlo pro2 bigger than pro ,both have usb cord can supply without batteries . besides, the batteries can chargeable . ,
i think arlo pro and arlo pro2 are better than arlo.

This is a great modification for the Arlo camera, which
took me almost no time to check out. Sadly, I don't have the resources
to manufacture a new Door, so I'm stuck with batteries for now. Any
idea how I could get a new door made?
